I’ve conducted workshops worldwide and every participant takes “Shannan’s Oath” at the top of my class. Essentially, we agree to be silly together, to play together, and to give 100% of ourselves in our time together. We take the time to go up to each person and say three lines and it goes like this.
Shannan: “Kristin, I’m going to say YES to your dumb ideas.”
Kristin: "Thank you. Shannan, I’m going to say YES to your dumb ideas.”
Shannan: "Thank you."
You don’t embellish the script. You don’t change dumb to horrible or fabulous, you deliver the lines - and mean them - as written. The other lines we say are, “I’ve got your back.” and “I’m here to make you look good.”
Imagine being in a room where you know your ideas will be supported. Where you don’t have to worry at all about how you look, how you come across, how you sound, because you’re simply here to make everyone else look good. And yet, you know if you do mess up, we’ve got your back. Every single one of us. The Oath imbeds confidence in all of us and creates a community and genuine connection immediately. We will flourish or fail gloriously - together.
